The Weight of a Coin

Seven years after his mother died of cancer, Sincere finds a dime at a bus stop, bends down to pick it up, and for four seconds he is back in her kitchen. She is at the stove. The whiting is frying. Then the world snaps him back to the bench and the bus is gone. What he should do is forget it. What he does instead is figure out how to do it again.

The Weight of a Coin follows a working-class Black man in Baltimore who learns he can flip dimes into kitchens that don’t exist. The visits cost him minutes, then hours, then the friends and the woman who are right here, trying to see him while there’s still time.
